When my family travels on vacation, we like to explore off the beaten path and find attractions and scenic spots that might not be so well-known. On a trip to the Pacific coast several years ago, I had every day mapped out with both celebrated and lesser known attractions on our itinerary. One day, as we drove through mountainous terrain a bit off the coast, we found ourselves in some places where not many tourists seemed to venture. It was beautiful country, and we were enjoying just taking in the scenery. We happened upon a clearing, where a charming cottage sat by itself.
A well-kept yard was the highlight of the home, with beautiful flowers blooming throughout the front yard. A cute picket fence surrounded the clearing, and on the front gate hung a sign, “Beware of Sneaky Dog.”
This simple sign caught our eye and our imagination. We looked everywhere around the home for the sneaky dog, but could not find him anywhere—he was, indeed, sneaky. For the rest of our trip, we searched for sneaky dogs, and made up stories about their adventures. As we hiked down to the ocean, we wondered if sneaky dog was somewhere in the brush or hidden in the rocks.
Wherever we went, sneaky dog went with us, although unseen. And to this day, we talk about him and wonder where he might be, what breed he is, and of course, what other name he possesses. While we never did find sneaky dog, we had a great time searching for him.
That trip stands out as one of our most memorable, because we forged a bond in wondering aloud why we should “Beware of Sneaky Dog.”
