A place long ago ripped by Civil War now offers the peace and tranquility that city dwellers so desire. Originally inhabited by Native American Indians, it was later on settled by Joel Chandler who built a textile mill. During Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign that mill was destroyed and among its ashes now visitors find the solace their souls yearn. The many unique plants are greatly influenced by the presence of the Brevard Fault zone which runs directly through the Sweetwater Creek basin. This fault created rising elevation giving the park a more mountainous environment than the surrounding area.
Located outside of Atlanta on I-20, at Thornton Rd; exit # 44, the 2,500 acres of park land offer nine miles of hiking trails, fishing, and boating. Bring the children or class trip & feed the ducks & enjoy picnicking and the butterfly garden. Sweetwater Creek State Park was created to save the unique natural and cultural history in this area.
