 Rock City Gardens

The year was 1932 when founders Garnet and Frieda Carter opened the 15-acre preserve of panoramic views and geologic formations to the public. Since then, many families have seen the magnificence of this park.

But the exquisite garden, where Frieda collected over 400 different native species of wildflower, plants, shrubs and trees is not the only attraction.

From the top of the mountain, you can see seven different states.

Rock City is an enchanted, 4,100-foot walking trail showcasing lush gardens, caves and soaring rock formations estimated to be 200 million years old.

A 100-foot waterfall cascades from Rock City down Lookout Mountain; a Swing-A-Long bridge spans nearly 200 feet and offers thrilling views to the adventurous souls who cross it.

More than a half million people from all over the world visit this natural attraction each year.

Another interesting phenomena at the park are approximately 70 painted barns. Early on, when Garnet decided to open this are to the public, he came up with a unique way to advertise it.

Instead of doing it through the regular media such as radio or newspapers, he hired Clark Byers to paint barns with the advertising message. The barns have become a part of the American icon.
